Removing hyaluronic acid from lips - how to deal with unsuccessfully injected filler

Fillers used for lip augmentation do not remain in the body forever. Over time, they resolve and are eliminated naturally. Sometimes the patient is simply dissatisfied with the result of the correction and wants to remove the hyaluronic filler from her lips as quickly as possible.

Different types of fillers have different “lifespans.”

Filler type Correction retention period
Permanent more than 5 years
Prolonged From 1.5 to 2 years
Temporary From 4 to 15 months

You can speed up the process of filler release by undergoing a course of procedures that enhance metabolism.

Darsonvalization

The physiotherapeutic method uses high-frequency pulsed currents on the skin and mucous membranes, thereby improving their condition. Increases blood circulation, improves tissue nutrition, reduces itching and pain, accelerates regeneration.

During the procedure, an appropriately shaped electrode is passed over the problem area of the body. In this case, the patient may experience tingling, burning, and intense heat sensations.

The doctor individually selects the irradiation mode, voltage level, duration and number of procedures.

On average, a session lasts 10–15 minutes, and the course can last up to 15 sessions.

Darsonvalization is absolutely contraindicated if the patient has a pacemaker. This also applies to other hardware methods that use electromagnetic pulses.

Microcurrent therapy (MTT)

With MTT, weak pulse currents with a force of 10 to 600 μA have a therapeutic effect. The procedure is so delicate that it causes virtually no discomfort.

Preparation consists of cleansing the skin, after which the cosmetologist applies a conductive gel to it and begins the effect using an electrode: stationary; movable; conductive gloves.

Electroporation

A hardware method in which cosmetic preparations are introduced into the skin using weak electromagnetic pulses. It is painless and has virtually no side effects.

Before and after photos: removing silicone from lips

“This is an example of how the perception of a face changes after harmonization.
I removed the biopolymer from Marisha’s lips, and her eyes immediately “lit up.” This is the rule: the gaze of the beholder always catches the eyes, so nothing should distract from them - neither a large nose, nor lips. Moreover, the adjusted lips immediately lengthened the lower third of the face, making it more model-like and memorable. Plump lips are a feature that is initially atypical for the Caucasian type of appearance. This means that girls with a certain type of appearance can afford such large lips and still look natural.

And it’s not a matter of skin color at all - lips should have a “place” on the face. That is, the proportions of the lower third of the face should be of sufficient length to accommodate plump lips. Ideally, the height between the upper and lower lips should be 1/4 of the distance from the tip of the nose to the chin.

But in harmonizing appearance, not everything is so simple. If the tip of the nose is tilted down, then it “cuts off” the full face, shortens the above distance, and the lips, even after moderate contouring, look artificial.

Only a true artist who knows and understands the principles of appearance harmony can correctly fit new lips into the structure of your face.” Performed by surgeon: Andrey Iskornev

Doctor with frayed lips

In a conversation with “360,” Victoria admitted that this incident happened to her three years ago. She explained that she saw how popular lip augmentation procedures were and decided to warn other girls: they should not trust clinic advertising campaigns that promise low prices.

Then, in 2021, Victoria listened to her sister, who found a “good” cosmetologist who was ready to enlarge her lips for almost a thousand rubles. Victoria’s sister performed this procedure on herself and advised her not to overpay, especially since she herself had no health problems afterwards.

As a result, Victoria arrived at a beauty salon that looked like a store, where there were two chairs. “Some woman ran into the office,” smeared “paste” on her lips, said that she was late, and asked her to quickly sit in one of the chairs.

Victoria paid four thousand rubles for the procedure.

She gave me anesthesia without gloves. She came into the store from the street and treated my [face]. When my lips were hurting, I started singing a song in Muslim. She began to pray in the process. Why did she start praying? Because in the process my lips began to grow. I cried

Victoria.

Victoria was also embarrassed that the doctor who performed the procedure had “tattered lips.”

According to Victoria, the cosmetologist’s hands began to shake at that moment. After the procedure, she quickly packed her things and left. When Victoria realized that her lips continued to grow, she started calling the cosmetologist - she stopped answering. When they managed to get through, the beautician asked not to write a statement in response to threats of calling the police, assuring that the swelling would subside on its own after some time.

As Victoria later found out, the drug she was injected with was expired and had not been certified in Russia.

The lips were completely cured only after six months, Victoria noted. The swelling subsided in about a month. The girl admitted that the situation affected her so much that now she even does her own manicure.

Is it even possible to remove biopolymer gel from lips?

Restoring the shape of the lips after previously injected silicone gel is an art.

When enlarging lips with gels, many believe that if necessary, “pumping out the gel” is a minor problem. After all, the gel was introduced through a thin puncture, which means it can be removed back in the same way. Unfortunately, everything is not as simple as it seems. This gel grows into the lip tissue, becomes overgrown with connective tissue (scar) and deforms the natural shape of the lips.

And in this case, lip correction turns into an extremely difficult task for the surgeon.

Defects requiring filler removal

Facial features will not immediately become similar to what the clinic’s advertisement promised. There must be a rehabilitation period, during which the injection site heals, swelling goes away and the body as a whole gets used to the filler.

How can you determine whether the healing process is proceeding normally, or whether the situation is out of control and the filler needs to be removed? Indications for the “do everything as it was” procedure may include:

  • Asymmetrical and unsightly contouring . The hyaluronic acid should be distributed evenly over the lip, but if the drug forms a noticeable relief, nodules, or is present on one side in greater quantities than on the other, there is probably too much filler or the injection was carried out at an insufficient depth.
  • Distortion of facial proportions. If the filler is injected too deeply or due to the individual characteristics of the patient, the filler can move under the skin, changing the contours of the lips.
  • Hypercorrection of lips , which end up looking not just unnatural, but ugly.
  • Hematomas , severe redness and swelling for more than 7 days.
  • Tissue necrosis , which is diagnosed by whitening of the skin.

Based on the scale of the problem, there are several ways to remove lips after hyaluronic acid: massage, physiotherapy, applications with special gels, injections of the enzyme hyaluronidase.

Depending on the density of the filler, the substance remains in the tissues for six months to a year. During this time, the filler is gradually destroyed and removed from the body naturally, which is bad if the procedure has a positive effect, and good if the “beauty injection” was unsuccessful.

The process of removing small amounts of hyaluronic acid can be accelerated by simply stimulating blood circulation. Intense sports, walks in the fresh air and healthy eating will help with this. If the problem requires decisive action, then you should turn to injections or physical therapy with the enzyme hyaluronidase or collagenase.

How to remove gel from lips in one procedure

The Platinental clinic has developed a surgical procedure that has helped more than 300 women regain their natural lips. It is unique because it allows you to remove the biopolymer gel from the lips and reconstruct your own lips at the same time.

Removal of gel from lips is carried out according to a specially developed scheme IN ONE PROCEDURE

.

But the need to remove gel from your lips is only part of the task. Therefore, during the same operation, the harmonious shape of the lips is restored and excess mucous membrane, which hangs in the form of “curtains” in the upper lip area, is eliminated.

The biopolymer is removed through an incision on the inside of the lip. This avoids damage to muscles and blood vessels, as well as the appearance of an unsightly scar on the lips. The operation is completed with a special internal suture, which will not be noticeable after healing.

Surgeons Maxim Vasiliev and Andrey Iskornev during an operation to remove biopolymer gel from the lips. Surgeons at the Platinental clinic have helped more than 300 patients regain their natural lips.

During surgery, the shape of the lower lip is usually also corrected in order to maintain the natural proportion, when the lower lip is 1.5 times “plumper” than the upper.

As for the upper lip, removal of excess gel is also performed in the area above the upper lip to eliminate the so-called “duck mouth” effect.

Is it possible to remove filler at home?

The methods of electroporation, darsonvalization, microcurrent therapy, and vaporization are suitable for carrying out procedures at home. But for this you need to purchase the appropriate equipment and undergo detailed instructions.

Home procedures must be prescribed by a cosmetologist. Inept, careless or uncontrolled use of devices can cause significant harm not only to appearance, but also to health in general.

Massages and compresses are also suitable for doing at home. But they can only be used after consultation with a specialist.

Modern methods of lip augmentation

Modern cosmetology offers a huge selection of procedures that correct the shape of the lips:

  • introduction of gels;
  • lipofilling;
  • threadlifting;
  • surgical intervention;
  • electroporation.

The use of gels is one of the most popular augmentation methods. It gives quick and fairly long-lasting results. Gels can be biopolymer and biodegradable.

The former help to get a more lasting result. They are synthetic based and therefore biodegrade very slowly. The most popular include: “Dermalife”, “Matridex”, “Matridur”.

But they have significant drawbacks: after several years they can move from the injection area to another area, thereby distorting facial features. This often causes an inflammatory process. In addition, if a woman decides to remove the composition from her lips, it will be very difficult to do so. Even with a successful outcome of the operation, scars are possible.

The latter are considered temporary drugs. They have a natural base - hyaluronic acid, which dissolves after six months or a year. It is part of many human tissues (skin, cartilage, etc.), therefore it is completely biocompatible with the human body and does not cause a rejection reaction. The filler is injected into the skin with a thin syringe, after which it is distributed into the tissues with light massage movements by the cosmetologist. Such gels never move and leave no traces behind. The most popular: Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane.

Among the disadvantages: the need to repeat the manipulation, high cost.

Lipofilling – the patient’s own fat tissue is used as a filler. As with biodegradable gels, there is no rejection reaction. The effect of the procedure lasts much longer. This is because fat cells take root well, are tightly attached to the injection area, and are fed from nearby blood vessels. But a small part of the filler still undergoes resorption. The patient must be ready to accept the result of the procedure, since the modified lips will never look the same again. It is performed under general anesthesia, so it is not suitable for everyone.

Threadlifting involves the introduction of biodegradable mesothreads into the lips. Typically, they are made from polylactic acid, polyglycogel acid or polydioxanone. These materials almost never cause allergic reactions. Modeling the shape of the lips is carried out using thin needles. The threads promote collagen production, create a clear lip contour, and retain the effect for 2-3 years.

Surgery can be performed using several methods:

  1. Operation Bullhorn. After the incision and lifting of the upper lip, its red border is turned outward, giving the lips a visually larger volume. The incisions are made in the nasolabial fold, so the marks after the operation are invisible.
  2. VY-plasty. It can be reconstructive and aesthetic. The first involves a complete change in size and shape. Often used for congenital pathologies. The second slightly corrects the shape and adds volume. The essence of the method: several cuts (from 2 to 8), after which the inner part is turned out, all this is secured with a seam that resembles the Latin letter Y.
  3. Paris. After the incisions, the plastic surgeon everts the inner part of the mucosa in a horizontal and vertical position at the same time.

Electroporation . Under the influence of electrical impulse waves generated by a special apparatus, the tissues of the biolayer lipid membrane are saturated with low molecular weight compounds - hyaluronic acid. The method is suitable for minor shape correction, increasing the overall volume of the lips, and inhibiting the aging process.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Let us remember that hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that is able to attract and retain large quantities of water molecules, providing excellent cell hydration. It is widely used in cosmetology for the correction of facial features, including lips. Natural and synthesized acid is used.

The main amount of all hyaluronic acid is concentrated in the skin; it is located in the connective tissue of the dermis between collagen and elastin fibers, as well as in the cells of the stratum corneum - corneocytes. If we draw some analogy and imagine our skin as a mattress, then we can say that collagen and elastin are springs, and hyaluronic acid is foam rubber that fills the space between them.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our body. It is synthesized in it and participates in many biological processes. Its role in the body is truly invaluable. The most important and valuable quality is the ability to bind and retain water. It is known that one hyaluronic acid molecule binds 500 water molecules. It also has the so-called “diaper effect” - the ability not to release moisture from the skin.

Being an important component of the extracellular matrix, hyaluronate ensures the vital activity of cells, filling the space between them. Hyaluronic acid ensures the transport of oxygen, lymphocytes and other blood molecules and nutrients to the site of tissue damage and inflammation.

After 45 years, the amount of your own hyaluronic acid begins to decrease. Therefore, many resort to its artificial administration. Hyaluronoplasty helps trigger the production of your own hyaluronic acid, but other reactions also occur.

Methods for removing hyaluronic acid from lips

After the procedure, the hyaluronic acid preparation remains in the tissues for 6 to 12 months, depending on the density of the filler. During this time, the drug, under the influence of the enzyme hyaluronidase, which is produced in tissues, is gradually destroyed and eliminated from the body.

Through various methods, the time frame for biodegradation and removal of hyaluronic acid from the injection area can be significantly reduced. All of them come down mainly to local (in the target area) activation of metabolic processes, breakdown of substances and improvement of microcirculation of blood and lymph.

The fastest and most effective way to help remove hyaluronic acid from the lips is to inject (sometimes repeatedly) the enzyme hyaluronidase into the area where it is located. The latter is obtained from the testes of cattle and is produced in bottles in the form of a lyophilisate under the trade names “Hyaluronidase”, “Lidaza”, “Lidaza M”, “Ronidaza”. The results of this technique are observed within two days.

The enzyme can also be introduced into the lip area using physiotherapeutic procedures such as electrophoresis or phonophoresis. Unlike the injection method, physiotherapeutic methods are more convenient in that they do not injure tissues, do not cause swelling, and eliminate the risks of hematoma formation and uneven removal of the filler. At the same time, the distribution of the enzyme is more uniform, and its effect is longer due to deposition (accumulation).

In addition, hardware methods can be used both in beauty salons and physiotherapy rooms, and independently at home.

However, the period for the onset of the effect in this case is longer.

At the same time, it is impossible to remove hyaluronic acid using hyaluronidase if there are contraindications to its use. These include:

  • tendency to allergic reactions and individual intolerance to the drug;
  • the risk of developing hypersensitivity to the drug;
  • hematomas or recent hemorrhages in the corrected area;
  • acute and exacerbation of chronic inflammatory processes;
  • acute infectious diseases;
  • autoimmune connective tissue diseases;
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • the presence of malignant neoplasms, regardless of their location.

In these cases, hyaluronic acid can be removed using darsonval (contact or non-contact method) or microcurrent therapy. These procedures help improve blood and lymph microcirculation and, most importantly, stimulate tissue cells to produce their own hyaluronidase.

In addition, in order to accelerate the biodegradation and removal of hyaluronic acid filler, it is recommended to carry out electroporation with stimulators of blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, or with cellular activators that enhance extracellular and intracellular metabolic processes.

An indirect effect is also exerted by a special lip massage and special gymnastic exercises for all facial muscles, the use of warm compresses on the area of correction, the consumption of hot drinks, intensive sports exercises, and frequent visits to the sauna.

However, the effect of using these techniques is inconclusive and develops quite slowly. In terms of their effectiveness (as an independent treatment), they cannot be compared with hyaluronidase injections. Most of these methods can be recommended as additional to injection and physiotherapeutic administration of the enzyme in the absence of contraindications for its use.

Indications for removing hyaluronic acid from lips

Indications for the removal of hyaluronic acid can include both the aesthetic desire of the patient to return the lips to their original appearance (due to asymmetry, hyper-effect, uneven contour), and complications that arose after lip correction:

  • compactions and lumps at the injection site;
  • swelling and redness;
  • uneven distribution of material and deformation of the mouth;
  • allergic reactions;
  • hematomas;
  • exacerbation of herpes;
  • inflammatory process;
  • tissue necrosis.

However, it is necessary to distinguish between complications after the administration of hyaluronic acid and the normal reaction of the body. Normally, inflammation and slight swelling that appear immediately after the correction completely disappear within 3 to 7 days.
